VPK Program
Universal Pre-Kindergarten This is a great new program that was passed by voters in 2002 to be made available by the fall of 2005. This program comes as a relief to many parents faced with finding affordable, high quality Pre-K education. The program is voluntary and provides parents a 3 or 6-hour day of pre-school for children who are eligible to begin Kindergarten the following school year.
Students are fully engaged in an intensive 36-week curriculum including Phonics/Reading, Writing, Number Recognition, and Language Development. Key elements within their learning community are:
- Name, sound, and picture recognition.
- A variety of blending.
- Reading circles and beginning reading comprehension.
- Vowel rules. Long and short, one-vowel rule, etc…
- Building speed and smoothness in reading.
- Lower and upper case letters.
- First and last name.
- Letters and words.
- Counting 1-100; recognizing and understanding concepts for 1-20. Counting and writing by two’s, five’s, and ten’s.
- Writing 1-20 and the concepts of more and less as well as larger and smaller; ordinal numbers.
- Number family concept
- Addition combinations---- 1+1=2 through 9+1=10.
